Project Description
Obesity is a growing global health crisis, as it is often associated with cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Epigenetic modifications are emerging as key players in body weight regulation. These chemical marks on DNA regulate gene expression and influence cell function and disease susceptibility. The ERC-funded E-VarEndo project focuses on epigenetic marks established randomly in early embryonic development and shaped by environmental factors in the womb. Researchers will identify such metastable epialleles and unravel how they influence susceptibility to metabolic and endocrine diseases. The E-VarEndo framework extends beyond metabolic conditions, and is expected to help understand epigenetic contributions to a broad range of human diseases, including neurological and cardiovascular conditions.
